We had trouble breathing after a few hours in the moldy room, and there was an infestation of bugs. They seemed likely to be the kind that eat mold, so at least they didn’t directly harm us. We were asked to pay at check-in, and in hindsight we understand why. There was no partial refund. We could have asked for a chemical spray, they said, as if that would immediately solve everything. The really positive reviews seem mostly to be from a few years ago, when the place apparently lived up to its three-star reputation. More recent reviews seem to reflect its current state better. The staff were friendly and reacted kindly when we mentioned the insects, but based on our conversation with them, I have questions about whether management knows about the mold and bugs. For $50-70, the choice seems to be breathing in spores or chemicals for the night. Two stars for the location in the middle of Fort Galle and the nice, very clean shower, which had the best water pressure we’d had so far in Sri Lanka. Based on our experience, though we hope others have a different one, you either pay at least $150 a night for a decent hotel in Fort Galle or come just for a day trip. The value for money felt very different here compared with other places in the country.

Pay attention: the photos online show private rooms, but the booking is actually for a bunk in a mixed dormitory, with four beds crammed into 10 sqm. It seems intentional, since the text is small on the phone while the photo of the double bed is larger. When you ask to upgrade to a private room, they say everything is booked, leaving you stuck with a non-refundable reservation.

The location is great, but I wouldn’t recommend the place. I stayed in a dorm room with a comfortable bed, though it constantly smelled of mildew and was so damp it nearly made breathing difficult. I asked about lockers or a room key, and the man just said no and left. Since the room opens straight onto the street, I had to take all my valuables everywhere, including my work laptop. That made exploring Galle Fort unpleasant. The WiFi didn’t reach the room, so working there was impossible. There are plenty of cute cafes in Galle, so that was the least of my problems.

The place feels warm and stylish, with a cozy interior and everything kept really clean. The service stood out too, everyone was friendly, attentive, and professional. A lovely spot to unwind and spend some quality time. Highly recommend it.
