Kikili House Galle

This is a colorful, intimate little place where you feel at home right away. The staff are wonderful, friendly, and helpful, and they can arrange tuktuks at local prices. It's a short ride from the Fort. If you're after a bland hotel that could be anywhere, this isn't it. I'd definitely come back.

Kikili house brought me back to life a bit. I want to spend a week there someday, sitting on the sofas to read and write, taking my time over a long breakfast, walking to Dutch town for lunch, then listening to jazz and creating through the evening. It isn't expensive, so that feels doable. I needed to get away from the city, and now it feels as necessary as breathing. Sri Lanka seems like paradise to me, with its clean, calm people and Dutch colonial culture. So many foreigners have come and made lovely places to eat and stay. Kikili means hen, and... well, there are lots of hotels, homestays, and Airbnbs, but not all of them get it right. Kikili House did: it has the intent, skill, and all the small touches that create a memorable atmosphere and draw the right people. My mind came alive there, like I was finally living.

We chose to leave a day early after a disappointing night at Kikili House. The air conditioning wasn't working properly, so it was hard to sleep. When we told the staff we were checking out early, no one even asked why. Later, we emailed them about the problems, but they didn't offer any compensation. The cleanliness was poor when my partner and I arrived. There was a lot of dust on the bed netting, dead bugs on the bathroom windowsill, and mould on the bathroom lamp. We've never written a review like this before, but people should know what happened before deciding to stay.

Such a cute, cozy villa, with clean, colorful rooms. It's really close to Galle Fort, and there's a market just down the street. Paradise, guys.
