Shangri-La Hambantota

Watching the sun set over the beach from the main pool was a highlight. The outdoor pools were well maintained, and the triple room had plenty of space and an eye-catching design that felt relaxing. Dining was enjoyable too, with tasty food and a good range of choices. The dining areas were organized, and staff were attentive and professional. The golf course was in good shape, and there were other things to do, including 8-ball pool and table tennis. The recreation team could also lend rugby balls to guests. Some parts of the property looked a little under maintained, though that didn’t take much away from our calm and pleasant stay. It’s a comfortable getaway for local or international visitors.

We waited nearly an hour for drinks at the pool bar, and service was the weakest part of our stay. More than once, guests who didn’t seem to be Sri Lankan were served catered items after placing their orders later than us. At checkout, someone behind me was helped first even though I was already waiting in line. I had to say I was next before they processed it, and then they apologized. Those service inconsistencies and the perceived preference for some guests affected our experience quite a bit. The property itself is beautiful, with impressive pools, amenities and spacious, well kept grounds. The facilities live up to the brand’s luxury image, and the food was generally good. But choices were limited later in breakfast and dinner service. By 9:30 AM, for instance, the juice had run out and wasn’t replenished. There aren’t any restaurants within walking distance, and Uber Eats doesn’t deliver to the area, so guests depend heavily on hotel dining. That made the limited choices more noticeable. The hotel has a lot of potential, and more consistent, attentive and fair service would make a big difference.

Wildlife wandering around the resort was a fun surprise. We saw monkeys, peacocks and chipmunks roaming freely. The buffet at Bojunhala had a good selection, and service there was great. There’s a lot of room to explore, plus plenty to do: an 18 hole golf course, several pools, archery, cycling, table tennis, board games, pool, beach volleyball and football beside the ocean. The gym was in excellent shape, with a range of high quality machines. With sunbeds, cushions and shade around the pools and beach, it’s a lovely place to spend a few quiet, relaxing days. We booked a king bedroom but were first given a twin room with a musty smell. It took three complaints for them to change it, and about an hour before we got a king room. That seemed unreasonable, so I’ve taken off a star.

The stay was especially memorable because of the care we received at Bojunhala. At every meal, the reception and service teams checked what we needed and made sure we were comfortable. The Front Office team had also made us feel welcome from the start, with friendly, thoughtful support throughout. The hotel was clean, the bed linen was up to a high standard, and the food and surroundings were excellent. It all felt carefully looked after.
