The Bed

I liked how quiet this place was, even though it’s close to the beach and three surf spots for different levels. The hotels across the street sit about 20 metres nearer the beach, but they’re right by the road and noisy. This was the best hotel of my two months of travel so far, so I didn’t mind the internet being unreliable at times. The owner was gentle, helpful and trustworthy, never pushy. The place is newly renovated and clean, which stood out after seeing so many dusty, unswept hotel floors in Sri Lanka. The bathroom is new and has working hot water, the big mattress is comfortable, the fridge works, and I loved the balcony. I stayed one night with my sister and plan to return next week for three weeks.

The owner and staff made our vacation relaxed and enjoyable, and the attached Poppadum restaurant serves delicious food. The rooms are cosy, functional and thoughtfully set up for travellers. It felt like a home away from home in Hikkaduwa. Breakfast is included: coffee or tea, an egg dish, toast and fresh-cut fruit. I’d recommend the Sri Lankan Omlette.

We stayed six days and felt right at home. Ninlanga and Nilanta were really cool and could help with lots of things, including a taxi. The rooms were clean and fairly quiet for central Hikka. Breakfast was good and great value. Wifi wasn’t completely stable, but it worked fine.

The people were very nice and breakfast was good. The problem was the noise from a nearby party venue. For example, on Friday we didn’t sleep at all.
