Charlton Kandy Rest

Clean linen, bathrooms and rooms, plus fast WiFi. I got a good night’s rest here for a day. If you need an affordable place in a quiet, central spot, I’d recommend it.

Charlton Hotel is peaceful and right in the middle of Kandy town, so places like the Temple of the Tooth (Dalada Maligawa), Sahas Uyana, KCC, Food City and several restaurants are easy to reach on foot. The owner is friendly, but the facilities don’t match the room prices. Family AC rooms were Rs. 6000-6500, normal rooms Rs. 4500, and budget rooms Rs. 2850. The budget rooms have wooden floors that feel weak underfoot. Their bathrooms are outside, very small, not very clean, and poorly ventilated. The rooms are small too, with little ventilation, and the beds don’t feel sturdy and make noise when you move. The cheap wooden doors let sound travel, so you can hear people outside and they may hear you. I’d suggest lowering the rates or improving the facilities to make them fit the price.

The staff were polite, but the lack of professionalism and hospitality was hard to overlook. They were borrowing shampoo and cigarettes from guests. With a child staying with us, the poor conditions were especially upsetting. The toilet was very dirty, with fungus visible on the walls, no ventilation and a constant damp, foul smell. The room also felt moist and unhealthy, with poor airflow. No basic toiletries were supplied. Cleanliness and basic standards were seriously lacking. I wouldn’t recommend this place.

Not worth the money, and they cheated us on the room rates too. We paid 5500 for a Non Ac double room and 7500 for a Tripple room. The rooms were tiny, with no ventilation or privacy, and they were very dirty. The washrooms were dirty as well, and the hot water usually didn’t work. The owner was very bad and the staff weren’t helpful either. It wasn’t a nice stay.
