Mahaweli Reach Hotel

Our wedding week was exhausting, and one small act as we left after two nights of our honeymoon stay has stayed with me. The valet went to bring our car around, then took a little longer than expected. He’d stopped to hand wash the dusty windshield so we could have a clear drive home. That thoughtful touch says a lot about the care here. Mahaweli Reach was our choice for the wedding, and the support from the team was immense from the warm welcome at the gate through to the last moments of our stay. Staff kept finding ways to go above and beyond. The F&B team made us feel at home each morning, and the whole team helped make our milestone seamless. The pristine rooms and beautifully maintained gardens created a lovely atmosphere and incredible value. Even though the hotel is popular for functions, it still felt incredibly relaxing. This was easily the best experience I’ve had at most of the hotels I’ve visited in Sri Lanka. We’ll make a point of coming back to Mahaweli Reach whenever we visit Sri Lanka.

I only had one night here, so I’m already looking forward to coming back. The room was spacious, with a nice view of the Mahaweli river, and the resort was scenic and very well maintained. Attentive staff looked after us, and the breakfast and dinner buffets had such a wide spread, I had plenty to try. Special shout out to Samanthika and the lady making the omelettes ^^

The setting beside the Mahaweli River was beautiful and made for a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere. The property is very good, the staff were friendly and helpful during our stay, and the food was delicious and well prepared. A lovely place to enjoy the surroundings.

Two cricket tours were staying at the same time, and their groups were raising complaints about the service and food. We’d booked based on the 5* Google reviews, but they don’t reflect what we experienced. This felt like an at best 3* hotel, so don’t expect 5*. Our half-board food was OK, but not 5* level. A wedding brought loud drums that carried on until late afternoon, making it hard to relax by the pool. Because of the wedding, breakfast for regular guests was moved upstairs to a tired, dated banqueting hall. In the stairways, tens and tens of dead wasps had simply been left on the floor. At the pool, I asked for a towel, waited 15 minutes, then had to ask again. The river-view suite was a good size, though dated and a bit tired. Check-in took 75 minutes even though we arrived after 2.00 pm. We were asked to wait 15 minutes, then another 15, and eventually I had to chase them before we got our room. I discussed my concerns with the front desk manager, who at least appreciated my comments. The general manager said nothing and simply walked away. That attitude felt typical of the staff in general. Shaslika and indika were helpful, though.
