Kitulgala Heritage Rest House

The musician playing during lunch approached guests to ask for money, which made some of us uncomfortable and took away from the meal. The lunch itself also fell short of what we expected. For the buffet price, the taste and range of food felt disappointing and too expensive.

There were plenty of birds around the property, which made it a great base for my birding trip and made the stay worthwhile. The restaurant has an amazing view, and as part of our birding activity we crossed the river and walked through the village on the other side. I was there as one of the stops on my SRI LANKA birding tour, arranged by my wonderful guides from Bird Trails Sri Lanka. For this location, the hotel was a practical choice and did what I needed. The room was a decent size, and the staff were absolutely wonderful, especially about accommodating my dietary needs. The view was stunning, the rooms were clean and tidy, and the prices were very reasonable. We had a wonderful day at the Kitulgala Rest House, with amazing weather and absolutely delicious food. The staff were so helpful, especially Aariyadasa, who gave excellent service and helped us throughout our stay. People like him really make a difference. We’ll definitely come again.

The old-world charm is part of what makes this classic Sri Lankan rest house special. Nothing fancy, just plenty of character and a calm river view that immediately helps you unwind. We stopped at Heritage Kitulgala for a quick cup of tea while driving to Hatton, and it made for a really pleasant break. The staff welcomed us, served us quickly, and the tea was fresh and enjoyable. It was a peaceful spot to pause on the way. If you’re passing through Kitulgala, it’s a nice place to stretch your legs and have tea with a view.
