The room we got looked nothing like the Booking.com listing photo. We’d paid extra for a bigger, nicer room, but this one felt cramped and had a much smaller bed. The bathroom had a strong fish smell, and there was an unpleasant odor by the window, which made the stay very uncomfortable. When we brought it up, the staff seemed indifferent and offered no real fix, even though we’d already paid. We decided to leave. The high rating here surprised me. If you book based on the online photos, be careful, since what you get may be very different.

The staff were friendly, and the location is very central, but the canal view wasn’t very nice. The surfaces were sticky, the floor was dirty, and the furniture was old. Definitely overpriced.

The restaurant was a welcome feature, and the hotel itself was spotless, almost like a new building. But Agoda listed breakfast at $3 per person, while at checkout we were told it was $6 each. My husband and I paid $12 altogether. I feel scammed, and I have to leave Sri Lanka with a negative feeling because of this.

Right in central Negombo, beside a canal, the hotel is in an interesting area to explore on foot. It’s a fairly new place, popular with travelers staying their first or last night in Sri Lanka, about 20 minutes from the airport. Rooms are modern and clean, though they’re missing some facilities. Rates are much lower than at the Negombo beach hotels.

We began our SL trip in Negombo and stayed at Hive 68. The staff were friendly, and everything from check-in through checkout went smoothly. They kindly let us arrive early, too. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant, Gatsbee, and the food was amazing. Service was quick, and they have ice-cold beer.
