The family running this place are incredibly kind and gentle, and the conversations and connection made our few nights in low season memorable. They invited us to join their Tai Pongal harvest festival, a special memory from our seven weeks in Sri Lanka. They also helped arrange a boat to Pigeon Island, where we snorkelled with 15-20 reef sharks and a turtle. Go early, before the other boats arrive, since the sharks are shy and disappear when there are too many people. In low season, ask lifeguards where it’s safe to swim because some parts of the beach have rip currents. The rooms and bathrooms are basic, but the price is fair for that. It’s a minute or two from the beach. If you’d like anything about your stay changed, talk to your hosts. Their gentle manner shouldn’t be mistaken for disinterest; they’re an amazing family with so much heart.

The owner was warm, friendly, and helpful, and the beach is about 100 m away. Nilaveli is a small, quiet village, and as backpackers we found everything just right. Bring enough cash, since there’s no ATM in Nilaveli.

The staff were helpful, and there’s a little garden where you can sit. It’s about 150m from the beach, so the dated, unattractive rooms and building may matter less if you plan to spend the day by the water. It costs a bit less than nearby options, but is still more expensive than most similar places in SL.

It’s a good cheap place very close to the beach. Book online if you’re planning to stay, because booking in person here can cost more. Watch the food prices too, they’re higher than the actual price.

The rooms were dirty and uncomfortable. The manager also changed the room price after I had already made my reservation, so I found him unreliable.
