Ferncliff Bungalow

The garden is elegant and well cared for, the setting peaceful, and the staff warm and attentive. But at Rs. 52,000 per night, the overall stay was disappointing. The rooms felt outdated and below standard, with an overly colonial style. Old, damp carpets had a muggy smell and made things uncomfortable. We stayed two nights. Dinner on the first evening, Sri Lankan food, was enjoyable. But the next morning’s breakfast was the exact same food, clearly reheated. We later heard meals are ordered in bulk and delivered every three days, which would explain why the same curries keep being served. That’s not acceptable for a place at this price. The photos also don’t show the current condition accurately, especially the rooms. We cancelled our second night and moved to another hotel. Not worth the money, and a very disappointing experience.

The meals were the highlight of our 3-night family stay at Ferncliff Bungalow. Everything tasted fresh and full of flavour, with garden-fresh ingredients and local produce. The Sri Lankan breakfast was exceptional, and the lamprais and beef stew were among the best we’ve had. Even the waffles and sandwiches were done just right. The place is peaceful, private, and beautifully maintained, ideal for a relaxing break. Service was warm and attentive, and made the stay feel personal. I’d highly recommend Ferncliff for a calm, luxurious boutique villa with great food. We’ll be back!

Bernard and the team’s generous, kind hospitality made our stay exquisite. They were so attentive, and the food tasted like it belonged in a Michelin star restaurant. Everything was homemade and fresh, even the ice cream, and most of the vegetables were home grown. The roast chicken at Christmas dinner was hands-down one of the best we’ve ever had. Ferncliff felt like a step back in time. The building dates to 1833, and many of its original furnishings are still there and amazingly well maintained. The lush garden is peaceful. It’s far enough from the busy town centre to feel like a different world, but close enough to walk into town.

The meals were fresh, flavourful, and clearly prepared with care. Every one we had was excellent. We spent 3 days at Ferncliff Bungalow and had an amazing stay. The staff were warm and attentive and made us feel right at home. A peaceful, memorable getaway, highly recommended!
