Hill Pride City Hotel

The meals were the one good part. They were generous, nicely seasoned for European tastes, not spicy, and beautifully presented for a hotel in this category. But the food couldn’t make up for the rest of our stay, and I absolutely can’t recommend the place. The room was basic and in poor shape, with cracks in the ceiling, mold marks in the bathroom, and suspicious spots on the decorative pillows. There was mold in parts of the stairwell too. The view was awful, with nothing “Hill Pride” about it. It was freezing. The little heater couldn’t keep up with the cold air coming through the leaky balcony door and single-glazed windows. I was still cold at breakfast in my jacket. The hot water didn’t even last long enough for two showers. At least the Wi-Fi was fast and worked well. The young man at reception seemed unmotivated and spoke very little English, so our guide had to translate. At dinner he barely understood us and didn’t seem to care. The famous Sri Lankan hospitality was nowhere to be found. He was as cold as the rooms.

We had a memorable time at Hill Pride Hotel in Nuwara Eliya. It’s close to Gregory Lake and other key attractions, which made getting around for sightseeing easy. The hotel was clean, cozy, and well maintained, with comfortable rooms that had everything we needed for a relaxing stay. Ms. Madushi and Mr. Nethmina were especially helpful, friendly, and attentive throughout our visit. Their warm hospitality made a real difference. We had a great stay and would recommend Hill Pride Hotel to anyone visiting Nuwara Eliya. We’d love to come back.

Breakfast was a letdown. It felt more like a meager snack than a proper meal, adding to an already frustrating stay. Our rooms also weren’t ready at the promised 2 PM check-in, so we waited an hour before we could get in. Then the water suddenly stopped after 11 PM on our first night. We had no water for the rest of the night, and the outage continued across all three floors until we checked out at 10 AM. It disrupted our plans and caused a lot of inconvenience. We tried calling the staff many times, but they ignored us and showed little interest in fixing the problem promptly. The poor facilities and lack of maintenance made the stay much worse. There are serious management and service problems here. I’d strongly advise against staying until they make significant improvements.

I was surprised to read so many bad reviews because I quite liked the hotel. It’s small, and the rooms aren’t very big, but they’re okay. The staff were really friendly, with no complaints from me. I also really enjoyed the food, especially the rice and curry. I was quite happy there.
