The property was a nightmare once we arrived, despite the pictures we booked from. We had reserved the whole place, but left within 30 minutes after finding another place. The rooms smelled moldy, and there was a lot of green and black mold behind wallpaper that was coming loose from some walls. The bathrooms looked leaky, and the shower was the “shock shower” kind, with missing or damaged grounding that could literally kill you. One room’s only outside door couldn’t be locked from outdoors, and the flimsy kitchen door opening outside had no proper lock. The kitchen was filthy, with what looked like animal droppings. Getting there was also hard: the road is very narrow and steep, with several tight turns, a challenge in a small car or any car. We’d paid a deposit to reserve the place, and the owner demanded a one-day payment despite its condition. We paid because we didn’t want to argue with the caretaker. We didn’t take photos while scrambling to find other lodging. I’ll report the mold we saw on the walls to the local PHI, though I’m not sure he’ll take action against the owner. Don’t book this place without having someone you trust check it first. It was the worst place in Nuwara Eliya.

The hosts were lovely, kind, and obliging during our two nights at Gregory Lake. It can be difficult to find, so ask your driver to call ahead for directions.

The property was locked when we arrived the next day, and the representative wouldn’t answer the mobile phone. We had to find somewhere else to stay. To confirm my booking, the owner or representative had asked me to pay in advance, and I sent it online. It was the worst holiday experience I’ve ever had. Never trust these thieves.

The caretaker was nice and friendly, and the Gregory Lake view from this location is beautiful. Just know that the inn is in a very quiet place up a really steep road. If walking uphill to reach your hotel isn’t for you, this spot may not suit you.

The family are very friendly and helpful, and the owner cooks a great dinner. The place looks simple from outside, but it’s surprisingly well kept indoors, though basic. There are two rooms, one with separate beds and one with a shared bed, which is a bit short for tall people. The bed is comfortable and the blanket is good, useful since it can get chilly. No AC is needed. Depending on the room, the bathroom is private or shared. It’s big enough, with sometimes warm water. Mosquito nets in the bedrooms would be a good improvement.
