Sinharaja Forest Edge

The tours were handled in a way we appreciated. We weren't given a hard sell when we arrived, just the details, and were asked to come back later if we wanted to book. We chose a seven-hour day trek and a night trek, both with Sagara. He's a lovely person and a real naturalist who knows his stuff. Nothing felt rushed. We could spend as long as we wanted watching wildlife and at the waterfalls. You can find cheaper tours at the park entrance, but we thought the value here was excellent. The buffet dinner and breakfast suited us well. There was a good selection of meat or fish curry, kottu, rice, coconut sambal, dhal, vegetables, omelet, fruit, and ice cream. The rooms were roomy, with a large comfortable bed and a big bathroom with a hot shower. There’s a buffet and à la carte restaurant on site. The grounds are a lovely blend of an elegant pool area and jungle gardens, and the rainforest is just a few steps away. The other hotel staff were lovely and looked after us. The family of street dogs nearby are the sweetest, always ready for a pat or belly rub. If you love dogs, take a little food and they’ll be your best friends.

Sagara was such a kind, lovely, and knowledgeable naturalist, with an eagle eye for spotting wildlife. He took great photos for us too, since mine were pretty average. We swam at waterfalls and saw many rare and endemic birds, lizards, and snakes. The accommodation was beautiful and the food excellent. The spot is amazing, right by the forest entrance. The owner, Prasad, happened to be heading from matara at the same time and brought us himself. I’m so glad we came and was very impressed.

One thing to know before driving here: avoid the Lankagama road in a sedan or any low-clearance vehicle. The conditions are poor and hard to navigate. The route through Deniyaya and Pallegama town is much safer and better suited to regular cars. Sinharaja Forest Edge offers a peaceful, refreshing place to unwind after trekking or sightseeing. The rooms are clean, comfortable, well kept, and surrounded by nature. Staff were friendly, attentive, and ready to help with activities or local advice from the moment we arrived. The meals were freshly made, delicious, nicely presented, and had a good variety of local flavors. It’s a very good choice for exploring Sinharaja Rainforest.

The host was friendly and the hotel was nice. But if you’re a hiker yourself, I wouldn’t recommend the tours. This easy walk doesn’t need a guide, and charging for one felt like an unfortunate cash grab. The guides touch snakes, poke scorpions, and disturb the wildlife. I really disliked that.
