Sinharaja Forest Gate

The location, views, and atmosphere are beautiful, and the staff are friendly, which made the management problems all the more disappointing. The unclear pricing completely spoiled my stay, and I left feeling strongly that I’d been misled. I wouldn’t come back. I first asked about a room for one person and was quoted 3500 LKR. Later I reserved for two, but no updated price was given. When I checked again on arrival, I was told “3500” without anyone explaining that it was per person, so I naturally took that to mean the room rate. Only at checkout did I learn I was expected to pay double. The room was the same, and the only extra service was a very basic breakfast, so the difference seemed completely disproportionate. When I tried to discuss it calmly, the manager became defensive and aggressive instead of clarifying things. He even threatened to call the police, which felt intimidating and completely unnecessary. The staff were friendly, but the poor, non-transparent management was highly unprofessional. A warning for Sinharaja Forest visitors: tours booked through guesthouses can be very overpriced. They often charge per person while the guide gets only a small additional amount. Going directly to the ticket counter to hire a guide is much fairer and cheaper.

I came looking for peace in nature and left stressed and without sleep. From start to finish it was a terrible experience. After a 2.5-hour motorbike ride, they asked for my reservation name before I’d even taken off my helmet. It felt very unpleasant. I wanted dinner at 7pm and ordered rice and curry from the menu. At 7pm I was waiting in the restaurant, but they’d forgotten my food and said they thought I’d asked for 7.30pm. It was the first restaurant I’d seen in Sri Lanka that didn’t have its national dish. After my hike, I asked for a Sri Lankan breakfast and was told it had run out. The hungover group had eaten it all, and they wouldn’t make me a separate plate. I went to bed at 10pm to get up for the 6am hike I’d come for. From 9pm until 11.30pm, a group of drunk Sri Lankans held karaoke in this supposedly peaceful place in the middle of nature. I called the “24 hour” reception five times without an answer, then had to go downstairs and ask them to stop myself. At checkout they said I couldn’t pay by card. It’s 2026, and this corrupt place only takes cash so it can avoid taxes. I had to drive 8km to an ATM. The owner’s literal response was that it wasn’t their problem. Think twice before coming. There are plenty of beautiful places nearby that run their business properly. Avoid this one!

I stayed for a night while making a documentary about all the entrances to the Sinharaja World Heritage rainforest. The clean, beautiful cabin sits right beside the entrance and forest, and I spotted a rare “frogmouth” near the gate. Breakfast was really tasty too. Cheers to the focused staff.

I can’t recommend this place and never want to visit again. The access road was the worst, and when I asked about it, the staff hid how bad it was. The rooms weren’t clean, insects were everywhere, and the bathroom smelled and was dirty. There were no mosquito nets, and the room was very cold at night. We didn’t have enough blankets, just a tiny cotton sheet that wasn’t even big enough for one person. The towels were faded and worn out. ❌
