Sinharaja Serenity Retreat

We loved sitting on the balcony and listening to nature. The room was spacious and peaceful, with a wonderful view over the fields and rainforest. The family were helpful and hospitable, cooking for us and arranging both our rainforest tour and onward travel. I'd definitely recommend staying here.

The hosts were friendly and welcoming, and we had three delicious, generous meals each day, including mangoes and pineapples grown at home. Our en-suite room had a porch facing a broad green field, and the scenery was lovely. It's a beautiful base near Sinharaja rainforest and the tea factory, where the host can arrange a tour. Wildlife is easy to spot, and the fireflies in summer are especially lovely to see. It's a remote spot, reached by a winding mountain road, around four hours from Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport. Still, I thought the trip was worth it, and the price was very reasonable. Cell service was good. We had no other electricity problems, though on Sunday afternoon all of Sri Lanka has a power cut for a few hours.

The host is an amazing guide, with deep knowledge and a sharp eye for rare endemic species. A walk with them turns into a memorable lesson in wildlife. From the room, the panoramic views are breathtaking, and the quiet feels profound. The only soundtrack is the gentle pulse of the jungle. Forest & Fields is a real sanctuary for nature lovers, and the experience stays with you long after you leave.

The villa sits in the middle of a field, giving it privacy and lovely views. From the north-facing porch, it was always pleasant to sit outside and watch pigeons and buffalos in the fields. The little house on the hill felt special to come back to after walking around the beautiful area. It's simple, clean, and cozy, less than a ten minute walk from the Forest Gate, restaurants and pubs, and a small village. We felt remote and close to nature, but also very well cared for in a genuine home at the rainforest's edge. Our host Thisarn was kind, helpful, and always nearby. He arranged a private guide for Sinharaja rainforest and a driver for our onward journey. Forest and Fields is a rare find for anyone after a quiet, relaxed stay with some distance from other tourists. If you get the chance, stay with Thisarn in his beautiful home.
