I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS FOR A SOLO FEMALE TRAVELLER. The owner cancels bookings on Hostelworld so guests can’t leave a review. I found my experience with Sheyan quite scary. Near midnight, while I was alone in my room, he sent me a flood of angry messages because I’d used Pick Me taxi instead of paying for a ride in his tuk tuk. I chose to arrange my own transport because he wouldn’t tell me the price, and I didn’t feel comfortable being alone with him. He had insisted on coming with me in the dark for the sunrise Pidurangula hike, but I said no. When he found out I’d gone alone, he got very angry and said I wasn’t supporting the business. Before that, I’d booked his safari and eaten at his restaurant every night. At midnight he asked, “where are you,” then started calling me “beautiful.” I was worried. I left a review after moving on to Kandy. As soon as it was posted, he and his friends began messaging me from unknown numbers, and I felt unsafe and on edge for the rest of my trip. After reading the Google reviews, I realized other people had experienced this too. I wish I’d done more research before booking.

The family who owns this place were lovely, and their service gave us the best experience. Their little child gave us a cute wave every day. We also did a cooking class and got to watch them make our lunch in the kitchen. Ten out of ten, I’d recommend it to anyone! It might be a bit too quiet for solo travellers in low season, but we had a great group.

The food was extremely tasty, and the area is naturally beautiful. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and this wonderful family runs a perfect Homestay. Their in-house cooking classes are really fun and a great way to meet other travellers. I’d absolutely stay here.

The families and staff were so, so friendly and made the stay feel truly magical. After dinner, they invited us to join the birthday celebrations, and it was amazing to see how another culture celebrates. You can watch every meal being cooked and join a cooking class to make your dinner. It was clean and comfortable too. This is one of the best hostels I’ve stayed in during all my years backpacking! It’s worth the extra effort to stay outside the main tourist area. You won’t regret it. 10/10 🙏❤️❤️

Sheyan was an amazing host, suggesting things to do nearby and giving us the friendliest service. He made us feel at home and went above and beyond to welcome us. We also had a cooking class and home-cooked Sri Lankan food. We stayed two nights in a private room, and the accommodation was super clean in a beautiful area. The spot between Dembulla and Sigiryia worked perfectly for us. It was only 1500 rupees by auto to either place, and the owners arranged the rides both times or took us themselves. No faults at all.
