Phil and Ruwan were happy to share local knowledge and suggestions. Smith Kitchen up the road was particularly good. The service from them and the staff was relaxed, friendly, and faultless, and we felt more like house guests. The immaculate colonial-style hotel and gardens were a pleasure, and we enjoyed seeing the wildlife in the grounds. We spent five nights there over Christmas with our two grown-up children, in the Lemongrass and Star Anise rooms in the garden house, away from the main hotel. Breakfast was served on the main building's verandah. Phil's communication was excellent, and we paid a small deposit into a UK bank account to secure our booking. The hotel is about 50m back from the busy main road, well placed for the beaches and all that Mirissa offers. Breakfast was the only meal during our stay, but it was so generous we didn't need lunch. There was fresh fruit and squeezed juice unlike anything we'd tasted in the UK, a small bowl of freshly made curry and the roti of the day, plus yoghurt, a sweet cake or pastry, and toast. Thank you, Phil and Ruwan. It was lovely meeting you both and having a Christmas we'll never forget. We only wish we could have stayed longer. This may have been our favourite stay in Sri Lanka.

We had the spacious Vanilla Room, beautifully furnished with a lovely balcony looking out over the gardens. Breakfast was plentiful and served at a table overlooking the nice infinity pool. The owner's wife was charming and great fun, and happy to arrange taxis, trips, or anything else we needed. This hotel is a real gem, with lovely rooms and a great location just metres from Turtle Beach, where you can really swim with turtles. If you get the chance, stay here. It's a real treat.

Our children loved the table tennis and played every day. The pool and shared areas were beautiful, and the rooms were very comfortable. The family adored this boutique-style place. It felt like a calm oasis set back from a usually busy road, with no traffic noise at all. I couldn't fault the spice house, and breakfast was good, with plenty to get the day started.

After a disastrous scam booking somewhere else, I ended up at The Spice House by chance. It was the kindest place I stayed on the whole trip. The professional staff were truly caring, and nothing was too much trouble. Phil and his wife were so warm and generous, setting the tone for the whole house. The colonial-style home has real character, with a beautiful pool and a peaceful, welcoming feel. My room was huge and spotless, and breakfast was even bigger. I can't recommend The Spice House highly enough.

The gardens and views are beautiful, and we loved watching monkeys in the trees from our big balcony. The pool was lovely too. We stayed 11 nights and found the place serene and charming, with welcoming, polite staff and a fabulous breakfast. The beach is only about five minutes away, and there are plenty of nice restaurants and shops nearby. I first booked through a booking provider, then contacted Phil directly and got a great rate. This place is a gem 💎
