The yard floods when it rains, and getting out means wading through water unless you have boots or a boat. Inside, the toilets smell and don’t seem to get disinfected, the dishes are worn out, and there are cobwebs in the corners. The hostel is dirty and run-down, and the way the hostess Ramani treats people made my stay miserable. She yells on the phone in the morning and argues with guests in the evening. I’ve never dealt with that kind of rudeness at a hostel. It really spoiled my vacation in Sri Lanka. Terrible place, I wouldn’t recommend it.

The worst part was that the owners took the gas canister I’d bought for cooking. The place also gets flooded in the rain, so you have to walk through water to reach home. The common area was dirty and poorly cleaned. Chandra and Ramini kept changing the rental terms after first offering a good rate, then asking for extra money for electricity, gas and internet. They’d yell at us while we were eating, even about a light or fan being on. I found the whole stay awful. Avoid this guesthouse.

This is actually about Jayalath Restaurant, across from the Gold Coast, facing the main road and Weligama Bay. It may have the same owners. The service is excellent and the food is consistently good, above standard and worth the price. Try the fried prawns or the lovely nasi goreng with pineapple. Best food around Weligama Bay, in my opinion.

My number one choice of all the hosts I’ve had. The rooms are good, the beach is close, and for me this is the best place in Weligama and all of Sri Lanka.
