Hostel Viktorija with Private Rooms

The staff were friendly and the service was good, and the room was otherwise very clean with an alright bed. But there was mold in the shower, and at first the water was only around 20°C. That’s a lot of wasted potential, and I wouldn’t stay again. Even at €20 a night, that’s not acceptable. I didn’t try the WiFi since I had unlimited roaming data, and I didn’t include breakfast, though there are some very good places nearby to get coffee.

The room looked like the pictures and the hotel was clean. It could use some improvement, but for the price it was totally acceptable. The city center is about a 20-25 minute walk away. Reception is open around the clock, the staff were helpful, and they let us leave our luggage at reception after checkout.

The place felt unsafe, with lots of very drunk people coming in, shouting, and breaking things. The staff were very rude. While we were there during the permitted hours, the receptionist deliberately switched off the music on the TV in the common area and made us leave, even though the bar is open 24/7. Our room was unpleasant too. There was a big spider, the table was broken, and the rooms look very old. I wouldn’t recommend staying here, especially with kids, given all the drunk people around.

The fifth-floor room was miserably cold. The only warmth came from hot water pipes in one corner, which apparently fed the radiators that had been turned off. There was no extra bedding, and the bathroom water was tepid. The WiFi was problematic too. I checked out cold and depressed instead of trying to spend the night there. The bedhead had two shiny patches in the blue paint, and the old fittings and furniture were battered. I’d wanted to make Viktorija work on my first visit to Riga, and the cozy reception seemed inviting in February, even with below-zero temperatures outside. Maybe it’s lovely in summer.
