We were sitting in the outdoor public area with beer we had bought elsewhere, since the restaurant was closed and people were bringing in their own food and drinks. It was my birthday, and the beers were tucked away in a bag. Simo came over to take a coffee order. There were three of us, and only my friend's wife wanted coffee. When Simo noticed the beer, he said we couldn't drink it there because the hotel had no license to serve alcohol. I pointed out that we had bought it outside and they weren't serving it. He insisted we had to buy coffee if we wanted to keep our beer, and drink it from the can rather than hotel glasses. I refused to be pressured into buying something I didn't want when others had brought their own things without ordering. I complained at reception and got the same answer about the license. I don't see how that applied to drinks bought elsewhere and consumed in a public outdoor area where other people were having their own food and drinks. I understand that some people in a Muslim culture may be uncomfortable serving alcohol or being around those drinking it, but nobody told me that was the issue. I also spoke with two other receptionists, Noura and Sana. The waiter was rude, refused to speak to us, and wouldn't serve the coffee we'd ordered. It felt like he was treating us disrespectfully because I had alcohol. Nice place, but the staff experience was horrible. People who act like this shouldn't work in customer service, especially in a multicultural place visited by tourists from all over.

Our room was roomy and very clean, and the staff made us feel welcome the whole time. The hotel is in a perfect spot. Breakfast was good, though I had better during my time in Morocco. We had a great stay and I'd definitely come back.

The location is the one thing I can praise. If you're after a five-star stay, this isn't it. The place may have been five-star years ago, perhaps 15 years back, but it doesn't feel that way now. It lacks basics I'd expect at that level, like a bellman, concierge, luxury touches, robes, upscale soaps, gourmet dining, and consistently careful cleaning. Our room looked neither updated nor properly maintained. The toilet paper holder was coming off the wall, the shower faucet was barely attached, and the curtain track was broken so the curtains couldn't fully close. There seemed to be black mold in the bathroom, and cleanliness overall fell short. We booked for three people but got only two towels, something a five-star hotel would usually sort out without being asked. Breakfast was mostly bread and spreads, with cold scrambled eggs in a frying pan on the table rather than on a warmer. Dinner was advertised, but when we went to look, the restaurant had no guests or staff. I can see why it might once have been rated five stars, but I'd struggle to give it two today.

We stayed for two nights on our Gate1 Discovery tour, and all of us came away feeling cheated. This is a very basic hotel, and I don't understand the five-star rating. Its quality was nowhere near that of the other hotels on our Gate1 tours. A complete letdown.

The rooftop views were beautiful, and our bedroom looked lovely and suited us perfectly. We also had plenty to see within walking distance, and parking was easy. The staff were so friendly and helpful. My husband joined at the last minute, after we'd booked for two, and they let us choose a room that worked better for three. Breakfast was perfect. The streets can get pretty loud at times, but that comes with being in this location. There's a cute Riad around the corner with a rooftop restaurant where we spent a lot of time. We had a great stay.
