The room was spacious and quieter than we’d expected. The bed and pillow were hard, but we slept well. Breakfast was delicious and filling, and we really liked the cheerful younger guy on the night shift who made it for us. The riad is well placed for walking around the city, with different doors in the city wall handy for drop-off and pick-up. We didn’t like that the showerhead was dirty, so we skipped showering until the next riad, and the floor around and under the toilet wasn’t clean. There was a slight mouldy smell in the room each time we came in, though we got used to it. Booking.com listed checkout at 11:30, but we heard a woman yelling at the younger man, who then knocked on our door and told us it was 11:00.

The location was convenient, the room was modern and clean, and breakfast was good. We felt so welcome and well looked after at Riad Dar Abi. The welcome was warm, and we got a nice introduction and a few tips about what to do in Essaouira. We definitely recommend staying here.

The whole Riad smells of flowers, and it’s calm and peaceful inside. I only came in to ask whether I could leave my luggage for a few hours, but even though I wasn’t staying there, they welcomed me, offered tea and let me use the bathroom. The two women who run the place are so warmhearted. Thanks a lot, see you next year!

Fatima was incredibly warm, and the way she said goodbye really stayed with us. We’ll think of her whenever we look back on Morocco. She gave us good advice, booked a dinner reservation for us, and even offered to bargain on our behalf when we couldn’t get a good price ourselves. Her hospitality was unmatched.

The Riad is a little oasis away from the busy Medina, and we had a wonderful stay. Julien and his mother are lovely and went out of their way to help. After I mentioned on arrival that I’m gluten free, they made me a delicious, healthy breakfast each morning. They said they might be able to get gluten-free bread if I let them know in advance. Julien also printed my boarding pass, which I needed at the last minute for a flight with certain airlines in Morocco. The bed was very comfortable, and the showers were lovely, hot and had strong pressure. Highly recommend, and I hope to come back.
