We had left a clear, positive review on air bnb, but after travelling around Morocco further, we found this place wasn't always trustworthy. It's a Dar, rather than a riad as the listing called it, and it could be a real palace if it were looked after. Our stay, though, was not clean: the cups and cutlery were dirty, and the shower didn't work. The hosts were hospitable, but we felt pressured to leave a good review. They also offered tours and trips at prices we later found were far above the usual rates. For the city tour, we asked Isham, a big man with a big smile, for half a day, no more than three hours. He took us out for five or six hours without changing the route to shorten it, and pushed us to buy tapestries, food, and leather goods at ridiculous prices. At the end he charged 400 MAD, far too much for the experience. We later realized he'd played on our sympathy to get us to shop at the recommended stores. Youssef from our hostel Dar Bouanania had advised us about all this. After three more weeks travelling in Morocco, we feel ripped off and wouldn't recommend this place anymore.

We were the only guests, and they kindly let us keep the room until evening, which we really appreciated. The room was beautiful, and the people were warm and pleasant. Nobody tried to sell us overpriced tours or pressure us to eat lunch or dinner at the riad. Breakfast wasn't ready on time, but they more than made up for that small hiccup.

We'd booked two months ahead, but at check-in only a triple room was available. Plaster was falling onto the beds and pillows, there was nowhere to hang clothes, and the only light switch was by the door, so getting up from bed in the dark was a stumble. The towels smelled, and the shared bathroom was grimy. There was no soap at the shared sink, and its smelly towel wasn't changed during our three-night stay. The rooms all face the central courtyard, where the owner sat taking calls, so it was noisy until midnight. The woman serving breakfast was kind, but it often didn't start until 9:30. I found the riad in a Lonely Planet book, though the conditions seem to have changed since it was published the year before.

The location is a real plus, close to Bab Boujloud "The Blue Gate," and the rooms are spacious and clean. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and helpful, especially when two of our children got sick. It's very good value, and breakfast was okay: a fried egg, a piece of crepe, baguette with jam, and tea. The Dar has an authentic atmosphere, though some of the décor looks worn. The air conditioning in both our rooms didn't work, so nights were quite hot. Not every room has its own toilet and shower, and the rooftop terrace wasn't decorated or in use. We parked at the small public lot just outside Bab Boujloud. The manager can guide you there if you call, but parking costs 20 dhm per night.

We arrived at 5 in the morning and the staff were very friendly. The interior design and breakfast were great, and the rooftop terrace has a lovely view. The housekeeping lady and manager were both very nice. Thanks for everything, it was a great place in the medina of Fez.
