The place felt shady from the start, and even getting there was confusing: the address on Booking was wrong, while the hotel's own website had the correct one. We only learned that after exchanging messages on WhatsApp with someone who was supposedly the owner. The Booking rating was 9.1*, but our room had moldy walls, water dripping from the ceiling, dirty towels and bed linen, and it was very cold overnight. Turning up the AC at night caused all the electricity in the house to shut off. Breakfast was included, but seemed to be microwaved leftover pastries. If you just need a basic place to sleep, it may do, but for anything more I'd avoid it while staying in Fez.

Our room was neat and smelled lovely, and the location inside the medina was convenient, near cafe clock and not too far from blue gate. They also let us leave our belongings at reception after checkout. Those positives made the experience tolerable, though it felt fishy from the start. We booked online through booking.com under the name Riad Fes Zayna, but were directed to Riad Fez Dar. They guided us from the Blue Gate without helping with our heavy luggage. On arrival, they took my phone, saying they needed to check the booking details. When it was returned, I saw the reservation had been cancelled. They said it was so they could give us a bigger room for the same price, but in other places that had happened without cancelling the booking. I suspected it might be to avoid booking commissions or protect them from bad reviews. A staff member also offered to help us buy something at a good price, then took us to his uncle's store, where the prices seemed high compared with other market stalls we visited.

I'm really sorry to leave one star, but being greeted by aggressive staff on Christmas Day broke my heart. Mohamed said our room had a shower problem, yet didn't even show us the shower. The whole thing felt extremely fishy, and we had only just arrived in beautiful Fes. Mohamed also made gender-based comments to other tourists dealing with the same issue. I was disgusted. Don't trust this place or stay here.

We had a confirmed Quadruple room through Booking.com, but when we arrived nobody opened the door. After 30 minutes waiting outside in the cold, a receptionist appeared, made a phone call, then said our assigned room had a shower problem and sent us to Riad Shauala instead. At Riad Shauala, we were told to pay the full accommodation cost in cash and cancel the original Booking.com reservation. It seemed like an organized scam to cut Booking.com out. We were exhausted and it was late, so we didn't argue and just wanted to sleep. Avoid this Riad.
