This was the worst place we stayed during our month in Morocco. My standards are incredibly low: most nights, hot water, heat, and a sheet that covered the whole bed were enough to make us happy. We stayed in dirt floor homes and hostels covered in bird poop, and I’d gladly trade those experiences for our time at hotel Volubulis. It takes a lot for me to write a bad review, and this is the only negative one out of all the lodging, experience, and food reviews we’ve made in Morocco. The bed was comfortable and the shower hot, so I’m giving it two stars, because I’m a fair man. Everything else had a weird vibe. Staff wore suits to create an air of elegance, but the rooms were overpriced and mediocre, like a 2 star motel trying to pass as a fancy hotel. There was no water in the room, though you could buy it at the bar for four times the market price. Our reservation said breakfast was included. We went into the breakfast area, checked in, and poured ourselves coffee before someone told us we’d have to pay. Then they charged more for their automatic coffee machine than we’d ever paid for coffee in Morocco. It felt like we were oranges and they’d built a complicated contraption to squeeze every last dollar out of us, as if our presence were an insult to the place. Avoid it unless you find comfort in bad energy.

I booked one night through Booking.com, then tried to add another night the next day. The manager said my room was no longer available, although Booking.com clearly showed that same room still available with breakfast included. She deliberately pushed me to book directly, outside Booking.com, so breakfast wouldn’t be included and I’d have to pay the full price. I felt completely misled and taken advantage of, and I’m extremely upset about how it was handled. They let me sit down for breakfast, then stopped me just as I was about to eat and said it wasn’t included in my rate. After seeing the very poor, minimal buffet, I didn’t even want to pay extra. She publicly embarrassed me. This could have been handled professionally with a smile and good service, or by simply offering breakfast on the house, instead of creating an unnecessary argument and pushing away a potential returning guest. None of that happened. Service: zero.

Looking back, this was probably the best hotel of my tour, though I wasn't especially impressed at the time. The restaurant team were really warm and helpful, and seemed genuinely curious to hear about Australia. I also appreciated that management takes the time to read feedback and reply.

The inward-facing riad layout gives the place a quiet, intimate feel. Rooms are spacious and have balconies, and there's a nice pool, though it only opens from 8am to 6pm. Depending on your plans, getting to the medina can be quite a walk. The nearest supermarket is about 15 minutes away on foot.

I wish I'd read the reviews about this hotel and the surrounding area before booking. The room felt very old, and the fridge didn't work. It seemed to be there just for the four-star rating, since it wasn't usable. I also ordered a meal at the hotel restaurant, but it wasn't cooked properly, so I left it on the table. There were taxi scammers around the hotel, which led me to rent a car, and I was scammed again even after doing that. That's how things are at the moment, unfortunately. I hope they improve, but for now I can only warn other visitors.
