Senator Hotel Tanger

TL;DR: Pay an extra €25 and stay somewhere else. I picked this place because it was cheap and I only needed somewhere for a few hours before an early flight. I regret it. There’s a strange smell on the first floor, maybe mildew. My first room was above the pool, which is open to the public until 6pm, so it was noisy, and the air conditioning didn’t work. The manager agreed to move me, but the replacement room had problems too. The windows in all the rooms are kept open and the A/C off. There were bug larvae on the curtains (see picture), no shower head (see picture), and the air conditioning barely worked. Bugs in the room left me covered in bites. For a morning flight, I asked the front desk for a driver. They quoted 150 diram, around €15, for the 3km trip. It should only cost 15-25 diram at most. From some other reviews, it seems the hotel may have an arrangement with drivers to overcharge customers. Use inDrive for the airport, or just walk. Hopefully you don’t make the same mistake.

The hotel is expensive, though it’s close to the airport for an early flight. Our transfer took just 3 minutes and cost €15. The air conditioning was broken, so it was hot, and the rooms are pretty run down. I think they open the pool to the public on weekends, because it was packed until 6pm, when all the locals left. We arrived around 5pm, but our rooms weren’t ready. The man at reception was very nice and apologized, offering water and tea while we waited. After over an hour, he said they were ready. We’re two adults and two children, and needed two rooms since there was no family room. Both rooms were occupied when we went in. Someone was in the shower. Luckily, they didn’t come out 🫣. We went back downstairs and were given new rooms.

The building looks fine from outside, but the rooms are old and badly in need of renovation. They made me feel like I’d gone back to the 80s. Breakfast was really bad. There was hardly anything to eat: the coffee machine was nearly broken, and there was no fruit, vegetables, fresh bread, or salad. The yogurt was gone by the time I wanted some. The woman serving was too lazy to make us an omelette, even though the first one she cooked had landed on the floor.

Having coffee and eating with the peacocks was a beautiful experience, easily the best part. The rooms are good, though room service could improve. The front desk could be a bit more flexible, and breakfast was all right but needs more variety.
