Tsara Guest House

The garden and terrace are peaceful spots with views over the city and rice fields, and the historic Upper Town setting gives Tsara Guest House a lot of character. It's a restored former church, with warm wooden interiors and tasteful decor. The staff are friendly and professional, and the restaurant serves well-regarded French and Malagasy food. Breakfast is especially good. Rooms are clean and comfortable, though some guests say they can feel chilly in winter. A superior room may offer more space and warmth. Wi-Fi is available, but the signal can vary. This boutique hotel offers a memorable mix of history and modern comforts, with a peaceful atmosphere and easy access to Fianarantsoa's attractions.

The staff made this the nicest place we stayed in Madagascar. Everyone was welcoming and helpful, and we had a very good meal in the charming restaurant. The restored buildings just outside Haut-Ville have lovely rooms with new sheets and towels, a modern bathroom, and everything working properly. It was easily our best value for the price. The owner also works to preserve and restore historic buildings in the city. You’ll see his name on signs if you visit Fianarantsoa's Haut-Ville, which is well worth seeing and is the nicest urban setting in Madagascar.

I ended up changing rooms because the upstairs rooms were all booked when I walked in. My first room was one of the large downstairs ones, lovely, though without a view. For the second night I moved to an upstairs room with a shared bathroom, also lovely, with wood details and a window view. The terrace has a great view, but there wasn’t anywhere to sit. Breakfast came with three homemade jams and honey, plus various other things. The restaurant area is gorgeous, all wood, with a sweet little garden in front. Staff were friendly and helpful, even with English, and it’s an easy walk to everything. Perfect 😁

We ate really well here, both at dinner and breakfast, and the garden was a lovely place to sit with a drink. The rooms are a good standard for a fair price. We only missed having a fan and a mosquito net, though luckily it wasn’t too hot during our stay and we had brought our own net. A really nice guest house.
