Famous Hotel Kalaw

The hotel had just opened when I stayed, so a few things still needed sorting out. Staff were friendly, the rooms were clean and modern, and there was plenty of hot water. Breakfast came as a hearty Western or Asian option, with fruit, juice, and tea or coffee to choose from. The view was the best in Kalaw, and being above the town’s bustle was nice. We were there in Jan and felt a little cold, so more blankets would help. The Wi-Fi worked in the lobby but not in our room. There was also a very bright night light in the room, so I needed my eye mask.

The view is the only good part. Everything else was terrible, especially the service. The windows can’t be opened, and the insulation is bad. There was no Wi-Fi, the kitchen closed at 6pm so there was no dinner, and electricity wasn’t available 24 hours.

The service was super poor, and staying at this famous hotel was a nightmare. The shower room was dirty and very messy. When the power went out, there was no electricity, leaving us in a completely dark room, and we couldn’t charge our phones. There was no aircon and no window. It was the worst hotel service I’ve had in my life. I don’t recommend staying at Famous Hotel Kalaw.

The view was nice, but the other services were poor. I was sick during my stay a few weeks ago and wanted rice soup for breakfast. They said I couldn’t have any because they’d prepared a buffet I couldn’t eat, and the kitchen couldn’t make something else during buffet hours, even if I paid. Funny. They also charge half a day’s price for early check-in or late check-out, even if it’s only one or two hours. In our deluxe room, the bathtub was made of poor-quality material. When I stepped in, its floor sank down as if it might break. I’ll never go back.
