Yangon Regency Hotel

It's right downtown and very close to china town, but that's the only real plus for me. Rooms are tiny, the air conditioner isn't good, the minibar is empty, and there's only a Chinese TV channel. The service doesn't match the price, and the waiters weren't good or polite. I think this place only caters to Chinese guests. Budget travellers would be better off near a hostel.

The free breakfast is decent, much better than the basic egg and bread served in many places. Rooms were clean and comfortable, with aircon, TV, and a good bathroom. The staff were incredibly helpful and went out of their way to sort several things for us. It's a really good value hotel in a convenient spot for exploring downtown Yangon.

We had dinner on the seventh floor and really enjoyed the home cooked style Sichuan Chinese food. The double cooked pork with steamed rice was good, as was the fish in gravy (Nga pau thin) with ginger flakes. We also had tomato and egg soup. Their in-house whiskey was smooth and really nice. They didn't have desserts, so we bought ice cream later. It's a no frills restaurant, with a simple interior and not very comfortable seating. Don't expect anything lavish.

A friend of mine from Malaysia comes to Yangon every month and stays at this hotel for 5 to 7 days. He's been staying here for a long time and says it's ok overall.
