I showed up at 6 in the morning in mid-January without a booking, and he still gave me food, drinks, and a place to rest before check-in. He made me feel welcome, gave me a big discount, and helped me with information about town and getting from Murun to khatgal. The room was cozy and comfortable. I highly recommend this guest house for travellers.
I stayed here for two weeks, and the bed was comfy. Bata is always busy, but still such a great host and well connected, he can arrange just about anything. I saw him drive people to the bus station early in the morning himself. He took me to Khuvsgul Horse Farm for a wonderful horse ride, which I highly recommend, and I went to the Lake with some of his friends. He also arranged a translator for people who wanted to take part in a shaman ceremony. His family is incredibly kind and loving. You really feel like family there. I'd recommend stopping by.
Breakfast here is amazing, and the guesthouse is right by the black market. The rooms were clean, with blankets, pillows, and a stove, which came in handy as the weather was getting cold. There's also a little cafe/canteen where you can cook for yourself, with a stove, cups, cutlery, kettle, and everything else you need. Bata speaks perfect english and can help organize a trip around Mongolia. Thanks again for all your kindness and help, Bata. All the best!
The vegetarian dinner was good, and the owner was very helpful organizing transport. He drove us to the deer stones and speaks fluent english. Our room was already warm when we arrived. We really enjoyed staying here and would definitely come back.
Fellow backpackers and travelers, I'd avoid Bata's Guesthouse in beautiful Mongolia. Mr. Bata's conduct gave us a very negative impression, and he sneakily scammed us. After being on the road so long, I can't believe I fell for it. He ripped us off over a 5day trip to the Tsaatan people, giving us false information about lodging, the national park entrance fee, bridge crossings, and the Shaman ceremony. Our English-speaking guide Geerle and driver Bor were wonderful, though. They were kind, flexible, and great company. Geerle kept surprising us with her cooking, and Bor was a blast to be around. We had a few minor problems because of the bad weather, which Mr. Bata could easily have helped resolve, but he chose to avoid us. When we returned to Bata Guesthouse, we were told he wasn't there. But we saw the curtains being pulled as we came in, and his car, white Toyota 13 88, was parked on the porch. We left Murun with a bitter aftertaste despite the unforgettable time with the wonderful Tsaatan people. Mr. Bata, karma works in mysterious ways. Travelers visiting this wonderful country should stay far away from Bata's Guesthouse and its representatives. Many other amazing people in Murun offer the same experience without being greedy and malicious. Check Lonely Planet and TripAdvisor for more details. Let's not let one individual negatively influence us or create prejudice.
