This charming hotel is located opposite the enchanting Fort-de-France bay on the west coast of Martinique. The airport is around 20 minutes away by car. Built in the style of the East India Company, the peaceful hotel building is part of a former family residence from those by-gone days. The hotel retains the original and authentic atmosphere combined with a warm hospitality. The reception area with its rattan and wooden furniture sets the elegant tone. On offer are a total of 139 rooms spread over buildings of one or three storeys, kept in the Creole style. The hotel's restaurant Le Chaubriand offers a view over the bay of Fort-de-France and serves an excellent international cuisine. A more relaxed, Creole dining experience is to be had in the La Sirène restaurant near the beach. The Coco Bar is located on the seaside and offers snacks. The Le Gommier bar offers wheelchair access.

The credit card company eventually refunded us after we disputed the $80, but hotel management wouldn’t help when I raised the charge. The manager said she had a meeting and walked away before it was resolved. We’d been charged for four chairs, even though we only used two, and my wife had paid because she thought the bill was for the restaurant food I’d ordered. We’d stopped at Hotel Bakoua with friends during a cruise and wanted to spend time on the beach. Before sitting down, we asked a staff member in a blue and white uniform about the price. He said the covered or cabana-style chairs cost money, but the regular lounge chairs were free. We used two for a couple of hours. The whole thing felt dishonest and left us very disappointed. Since cruise passengers may only be there briefly, it’s concerning that this can happen. I’d tell future visitors to get the chair charges in writing, or bring a towel. Based on our experience, I can’t recommend the property. Please be cautious.

That private beach was the best part for me. We were right on the beach, and the Creole village was only a three-minute walk away. The marina was five minutes away too, and I went to the Baguet Shop every morning for breakfast. The room was average, but the mattress and pillows were top tier. On vacation I mainly use a room to sleep, and for that it was perfect.

The view is amazing, and the location is great. The rooms, though, are badly in need of repair. My AC wasn’t working and the door was missing its deadbolt. The paint and decor have seen better days, and some friends had a shower head that sprayed water everywhere. Staff were often rude and dismissive, and unhelpful at best.

The hotel is getting on in years, and breakfast leaves a lot to be desired. The location is beautiful, though, and the lively neighborhood has souvenir shopping for tourists and a handful of different restaurants.

Our room was clean and the bed was comfortable, but the hotel and rooms feel tired and dated. Across several rooms our party had, safes and kettles didn’t work, one door deadlock needed attention, and a bathroom sink unit had cracks.
