Windmill Hostel

In December this was the cheapest hostel in Malta. It’s well maintained, and the owner is friendly and helpful, so I recommend the place. Cleaning comes every three days. There’s no guest laundry machine, but the kitchen has a fridge, oven, microwave, and all the necessary amenities. The common area has a big TV and a fussball table, and there’s an orange tree in front of the kitchen with delicious oranges. Entry is by code at the gate and another code at the door. The rooms have air conditioning and each bed has its own good-sized locker. The location is good, though getting there by bus from the airport means walking beside a highway wall, which can feel dangerous. There are memorial plaques at the end of the wall, LOL. The alternative is to walk around, which adds 15-20 minutes. There’s also a very dark underground crossing after you get off the bus. P. S. Apparently, the windmill used to draw water from a well, and the place was once the Indian embassy.

The hostel is clean and spacious, with only a few beds in each room and lockers big enough for all your belongings. It’s a little away from the busy areas, but close to bus stops and about 10 minutes from St Juliens. I think the location suits more mature travelers who want a cultural experience in Malta instead of lively partying.

The owners made the stay especially nice. They’re a kind, helpful couple who gave me detailed suggestions for nearby supermarkets and restaurants, which made traveling solo much easier. Their warmth and hospitality really touched me, and I’m happy to have been among their very first guests. Windmill Hostel was clean, tidy, and peaceful, while still being just a short walk from a lively part of town. I had a wonderful stay and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Malta.

The manager is kind-hearted, easy to reach on WhatsApp, and almost always at the property. He’s happy to help, which is a lovely finishing touch to a place that’s already great and has room to grow. It’s an affordable gem, even though they’re just getting started. There’s a secure gate, the building is closed at night, and cameras are in place. The garden is huge, with lots of seating and plenty of new plants being added. Inside there’s also enough seating, a big TV, and a football table that was added recently. The kitchen has a fridge, oven, and stove. No microwave at the moment, though one might be added later. The rooms are nice, the beds are comfortable, and each person has a locker. We also had a balcony, which was a bonus. The showers are great for a hostel, with strong water pressure and comfortably hot or warm water. Five stars.
