Cugo Gran Macina Malta

We spent New Year here and had a great week away, including the celebrations on the rooftop. The hotel overlooks a lovely harbour, and food and service were excellent. The ferry to Valletta is only about a five-minute walk away. Highly recommended, and thanks for a lovely stay!

The harbor views were the highlight of our four nights at Cugo Gran. We had a suite while travelling with our two kids, and it was a great room. We came in December, so the lights made the view especially lovely, and the ferry to Valletta is just around the corner across the bridge. Momo deserves a special mention. We arrived very early from our previous destination and weren’t expecting a room before the 3 PM check-in, but she somehow got one ready within two hours. She also sorted out a small reservation snafu, brought us complimentary drinks, and gave us island information while we waited. Everyone we dealt with was courteous and friendly. We paid to include breakfast, and even though it was delicious, by day four we were tired of it. The menu is short, with few options to customize. A few small issues: the spacious bathroom has an open shower stall that leaves water all over the floor, there are no bathroom outlets for hair tools, and some of the many other outlets don’t work, though they’re helpfully different types. There’s no heated pool or hot tub either. The towels and robes were so worn down that I was surprised they were still being used. They don’t fit the quality of the place.

The hotel sits in a former bastion, and staying there feels like stepping into another time. Rooms are large and well equipped, and the staff were friendly and involved. It’s a great base for exploring Bormla, with the Valletta ferry an easy five-minute walk away. We’ll stay here again.

We spent a weekend with friends at Cugó Gran Macina, and they made us feel special from the start. The room was spotless, huge, and beautifully put together, with thoughtful details and a real sense of comfort. They also arranged a boat trip, picking us up from the pier in front of the hotel and preparing a lovely picnic of sandwiches, snacks, and wine. They even helped carry it aboard, a small touch that made a difference. Caterina at reception was especially kind, professional, and always smiling. Thanks to her and the whole team for such impeccable service. It’s a truly luxurious hotel, and we’d happily return.
