We cut our planned 9 days at EQ Surf Retreat short and left after 4. The house is clean and well kept, the local staff try hard to help, and the food was genuinely good. But Muli was a letdown for a tourist stay, and the owner's response to our concerns made things worse. There’s very little to do on the island, just one local shop and one restaurant. We respected the local beach dress rules, with shoulders to knees covered, but the designated "Bikini Beach" was basically a rubbish dump, without palm trees or shade. It felt disrespectful to leave guests with such a dirty place as their only comfortable swimming option. Our snorkeling and beach viewing trip was a 2/10: the reefs were underwhelming and the beaches had litter too. A day at a nearby resort cost $100 USD for the boat taxi and entrance, and wasn't worth it. We left because of the state of the island and asked for some money back for the 5 unused nights. I was willing to accept 50%, but they offered only a voucher. I understand that guesthouses have policies, but the owner's personal attitude was the dealbreaker. I have a screenshot where the owner says they "really don't care" about our feedback because they "won't see us anymore." That lack of hospitality and professionalism is why I can't recommend it. The clean guesthouse couldn't make up for the island or management, so I wouldn't spend my time or money here.

EQ surf retreat sits across from F1, one of the Maldives' best waves. It's a great base for a few days exploring nearby surfbreaks. The staff take care of what you need, so you can focus on catching wave after wave. Totally recommended 👍🏻

The surf at Mushroom was a real highlight. It's broad, almost like a beach break, with plenty of peaks so you can move around instead of sitting in one spot. There were very few surfers in the lineup, and some days I had the water to myself, apart from the occasional safari boat. EQ Surf Guesthouse was a great stay too. The staff are friendly, and booking and arranging the transfer were quick and smooth. Getting to the surf spot by boat was easy. The food was great and the portions were more than I could finish. I even put on one kg despite surfing hard every day. It was a great, proper surf trip. Thanks.

The surf setup worked well for different levels, with mostly right-handers at Muli and Mulak and a fun left at Veyvah. Depending on conditions, there can be up to three boat trips a day, and the guides give a detailed briefing each morning. Mushroom is wide enough that even when other boats are around, people can spread out. The guides are friendly and share useful tips. They could take more of a lead with the group sometimes, though the extra freedom is nice, and we still felt safely accompanied. Local surfers were welcoming and generous about sharing waves, even if their skill and familiarity with the breaks gives them an advantage. The team also helped us make the most of days when the waves weren't ideal by arranging other activities. They were very kind and attentive, and made a special effort with my dietary needs. Food came in generous servings, simple, fresh and good quality: fish, chicken, rice, pasta, curries, fruit for dessert, and a great breakfast with pancakes and other options. I had a relaxed, high-quality surf holiday in a beautiful setting.

I've seen the surf instructors put students into waves that other surfers were already riding on several occasions. They don't seem to put safety first, and it creates situations that could be dangerous for everyone in the water.
