Kara O Mula Mulanje

Morning coffee on the porch with monkeys playing nearby was a highlight. Kara O Mula is a real gem in the Mulanje region, with well-kept grounds. Indika, the manager, has always gone above and beyond to look after my family and friends. He even cooked Sri Lankan dinners for us himself. It’s the best place in the area, and I’d stay here when visiting Mulanje.

A lovely spot for fresh air and a reset, with sunset and waterfall views, plus a zip-line and other activities. I’d say it’s best for two nights or more.

The tour of Mulanje that the manager arranged, including the waterfall at the accommodation, lifted our spirits and made us fall in love with the place. Sadly, it couldn’t make up for the stay. There was no electricity from our arrival after 18:00 until we left the next day, and we had to ask before they gave us candles. Our food took two to three hours to arrive, and my parents were served rotten food that gave them food poisoning. Their water had been shut off, the guest toilets were locked, and mosquitoes filled their room. Breakfast was the last straw. Apart from the cereal and fruit, it was inedible: there was a strange red sausage-like item, the tea was cold and had to be remade, and the beans were wet underneath but had a dry layer on top. The WiFi didn’t work either. We’d heard good things, but unfortunately didn’t get to experience them. Yoh, that place was a test from God.

The location is convenient, the views are fabulous, and we had a nice stay at Kara O'mula. We’d happily return, though there are several things to work on. Management seems to be trying to improve the place, and the outside area and bar are pleasant. Special thanks to Alexander, a friendly barman who gave excellent service. The fire and band were a nice touch too. Inside, the dining room and pool table area felt bare, cold, and unfriendly, with hardly any furniture. Curtains, plants, artwork, and more furnishings would help. The rooms were okay, but missing bedside lights, a ripped cushion cover, and a clean yet outdated bathroom brought down the impression. Staff are friendly, though service was inconsistent. They could use more training and support from management to meet expectations for a hotel at this price. We had half board and the food was okay overall. Even in winter, the pool should be kept clean and in good condition year-round for anyone who wants to use it. A few more tweaks could make this a lovely spot.
