Maison Bacalar

We had a car, so we could head out and explore farther afield. The walk into town felt safe, and with a flashlight it was completely manageable at night. Back at the place, it was quiet and tucked away from the center, with a lovely little garden and a very nice bed. The room worked well for us.

The room had no closet, which was awkward with all the clothes we brought. There were just two shelves and a few hangers in the bathroom, where everything gets quite damp, and the safe takes up half a shelf. Driving the local roads was rough too, though that seemed true everywhere we went. The owners try to build them up, but it apparently doesn’t help much because nobody seems to know how to do it properly 😂. I only took off a little for the room and wish I could have deducted half a star. Still, Flora and her husband made us feel so welcome, and we loved the peaceful setting. We’re happy to walk or drive a bit when we want more activity. It was a shame to cancel one night because we worried the drive to the Cancun airport would be too long and stressful on New Year’s Day before our flight home. They provided everything we needed, often before we even asked. We also enjoyed hearing about local culture and having our questions answered. The rooms were very clean and tidied daily. Leaving a small tip every other day was easy. The shower, smart TV, and AC all worked great, the beds and pillows were really comfortable, and the welcoming balcony gave us a slight view of the lagoon. The surroundings and little details felt cute and magical.

Flor was very kind and welcoming. The accommodations have a charming feel, with lush vegetation all around, and the lake is only a few steps away. It’s also far enough from the center to avoid the bustle. The place brought to mind the “magical realism” of South America.

The host was lovely and welcoming, but the rooms themselves were very basic and the internet was slow. The road was awful, possibly the worst I’ve ever driven on, and getting on or off the highway felt like a risk to my life. With the road in such terrible shape, the place just wasn’t worth the price.
