Hotel La Casa del Marques de Comillas

The people working here were really nice, and parking is two blocks away. Hot water seemed unreliable: we had it in the morning but not in the evening. The internet wasn't especially dependable either.

The historic decor, the location, breakfast, and the jacuzzi in my room were all fantastic. Parking is nearby too. I felt like a 19th-century President of Mexico, exactly the feeling I wanted. The Wi-Fi was poor, which business travelers should keep in mind. Normally that would be unforgivable for me, but I'm giving it some leeway because of the location and how much I liked everything else in the hotel.

We appreciated the great service, and the restaurant was very good. Our beds were comfortable, the rooms stayed dark and quiet, and the shower had plenty of hot water. We look forward to coming back soon.

I booked a room for three nights when I returned to Comitan two years after first spotting the inner garden. On that earlier visit, I went in to look around and was especially taken by a large painting of a festival. It had been taken down for refurbishing by my next visit. I love the colonial architecture, with high-ceilinged rooms arranged around a patio and garden. Each room has its own furnishings and decor. I picked a larger room away from the street, though it still had a window. Windows in the upper parts of the double wooden doors let in daylight while keeping privacy. I like lots of natural light. The recessed lights and lovely chandelier lit the room in the evening, and when switched off, the room went pitch black for sleeping. The king-sized bed had great sheets, pillows, and comforter, and the spacious seating area had comfortable chairs. I really liked the room, patio, and garden. The information said robes and slippers were provided, but they weren't. Slippers would've been welcome because the tile and marble floors were so chilly. My main complaint was the water temperature. At this price, a four-star hotel should have hot water. The first shower was lukewarm, the second was better but still not hot, and the third was barely warm enough to be comfortable. Very disappointing. The office staff, with one exception, weren't especially attentive. The location is excellent, and I loved seeing the white and gold steeples of inglesa San José gleaming in the afternoon sun from the patio.
