AM Hotel & Plaza

The am Hotel and Plaza felt like a welcome move toward the kind of place we’ve been missing. We used to visit Puerto Morelos in the CanCun area, back when PM was a quiet, friendly fishing village. It’s changed, and we’ve been looking for something like it in Huatulco. The hotel is close to the airport and within walking distance of the things you might need. Highway noise is noticeable, but it didn’t bother us, and we slept well. Our room was clean and well kept, with two queen beds, fresh linens, and a wall-mounted TV. The closet was tiny, though we managed. Hair dryers and irons aren’t in the rooms, but the front desk promptly brought anything we asked for. The small pool was fine, and we enjoyed the lounge chairs. Staff were wonderful and did what they could within the limits they had. English isn’t widely spoken. Keep in mind this is a simpler part of Mexico. If you’re expecting bellhops, a huge pool, activities, or English-speaking staff, an all-inclusive may suit you better. For what this is, I give the am Hotel and Plaza five stars. It’s in a three-star part of Mexico, and I hope it stays that way.

I paid $39USD and thought it was a great deal. If you’re traveling by ADO, it’s right across the street, and there’s a convenient store on the first floor. The hotel itself is nice, and the location is hard to beat.

The staff were kind and helpful, and breakfast was very good, though you pay extra for it. Still, I’d avoid this hotel if you can, since there are plenty of other choices. Our TV didn’t work, there were only two towels, and the shower enclosure wouldn’t close properly. It’s in a very noisy spot, and the ground by the pool gets slippery when wet. I hurt myself there.

The service was friendly, and I liked the rooms.
