Capital O Hotel La Siesta, Gomez Palacio

The room was nice and clean, and staying here was a good experience. The minisplit wasn't working properly, so it didn't cool the room down to the set temperature. It did keep the room cool enough that it wasn't terribly hot, though. Otherwise, things were good.

I was surprised by how nice the room was and how helpful and welcoming the receptionist was. It was one of the few rooms left in Gomez Palacio the night before the total eclipse, and easily the cheapest, so I hadn't expected much. The neighborhood looks run down, though that seemed true of the whole town as far as I could walk. I felt completely safe walking alone at night, and people were friendly everywhere. The train tracks are nearby, and daytime horns could wake the dead. At night, though, the trains were quiet.

No frills, and the bed was pretty hard. It wasn't great for sleeping on my side, but somehow I got through it. The pleasant surprise was that the rooms were non-smoking, so they didn't stink.

The bed was the worst part of my stay. The mattresses are so thin you can feel the board underneath, and it hurt my bones. I tossed and turned every night trying to get comfortable. New, better mattresses would make this feel like a four-star hotel. There's no breakfast here. The rest of the room was spacious, with a big bathroom and shower. Staff were polite and friendly, ready to help quickly, and cleaned and mopped the rooms daily. Most things are within walking distance, including a 7/11, Oxxo, plenty of places to eat, and lots of stores. Regular outside noise didn't bother me, but you can clearly hear the train horn when it passes, day or night. The hotel has a lot going for it, and I'd recommend it to friends and family if they replaced those beds.
