Blue Pepper Chapultepec

We left an hour and a half after arriving, unable to enjoy the area even though it seemed to have nice nightclubs. Inside, the toilet was disgusting and had vomit on it. The white sheets were dingy, and my daughter, my friends, and I felt like things were crawling on us when we tried to lie down. I had never had a night like this at a hostel. It was advertised as female only, but when we walked in, a man and a woman appeared to be making out on the lounge sofa. We knew the room slept eight, but not that it was shared with other people. Only top bunks were available for me and my daughter, and one frame was shaky enough that I didn't feel safe having her climb up. The room door wouldn't close.

I still have fond memories of this place, despite its shortcomings. It was inexpensive and in a very cool neighborhood, and I met interesting people who gave me good advice. I stayed for a month and a half in 2016, after about nine months on the road sleeping in forests. At the time, having a real bed and bathrooms felt luxurious. Looking back, though, the place was rundown and poorly maintained. The kitchen was filthy, and no one seemed to eat at the attached restaurant. Some residents, who I assume lived there full time, gave me the impression they resented short-term guests.

The place was very dirty, and the dorm lockers for keeping your belongings secure were all broken. There were no sheets, blankets, or pillows.

I’ve stayed in hostels across Asia, Latin America, and Europe, and Blue Pepper had the same feel as a cool Euro hostel. I was in a private room, and the price was just right for what you got. The bathrooms were cleaned regularly, and the showers heated up quickly. Check-in was easy, and the sightseeing options were pleasant and reasonably priced, worth every peso. Luis was very helpful.
