The long drive over rutted roads adds an hour, and the cabins are pretty basic: they have air conditioning but no fridge. You can’t swim in the sea, and the beach sand is hard. Still, this quiet spot in a Gulf fishing village has a Steinbeckian feel, like The Pearl, and the locals seemed nice. The beach dogs were friendly too. The people running the place were kind and helped us a lot, so thanks to the manager. The restaurant was a highlight, with fresh fish, avocado and tomato salads, and churros at decent prices. It’s a peaceful base for fishing and eco tours. If you’re not after a $500-a-night pseudo-eco spa resort, this could be a good stop. We’re glad we went.

The fish comes in from just 60 yards away, and I loved it. The menu could use more options, but I went there for fish and was happy with that. It’s a gorgeous, quiet beach setting, and the staff are very friendly.

Lunch was amazing, and I also took a tour around the area on a day trip. It was a fantastic visit. I’m definitely planning to return with my family and stay longer.

The mangrove trip we booked, with a chance to see the flamingos, was magical. They’re around from late February through April. It’s a lovely place to stay.

The cabañas sit right on the beach, and the location is okay, but there’s very little to do. The wifi is severely lacking. You can only get low-end Tecate, and there’s no beer vendor or ATM in town. Tours from here are really expensive.
