Calle Berlin

It’s a central, quiet spot in Coyoacán, but my room was dirty and the internet kept cutting out. I also suspect I was bitten by bed bugs. I wouldn’t recommend it.

There were hundreds of ants in our bed, luggage, and clothes when we came back after exploring and having dinner. The tiny room we were given was at the top of the property, with a little standing fan that took up much of the space. The sheets were stained and the towels were very stiff. We asked to move, but the only offer was bug spray on the bed and to sleep there among the ants. They later refused a refund, which felt extremely unfair since we’d spent only about 30 minutes in the room. I was really disappointed with casa boutique.

The kindness of the family who run this place is what I’ll remember most. When I was discharged after three days in hospital, the owner picked me up, found a room where I wouldn’t need to climb stairs, and moved my things from the original room they had kept closed even though my reservation had ended. She made sure I was comfortable and brought my first couple of meals while I was recovering, without asking for anything. She had also visited me at least four times during my hospital stay. This all began about a week into my stay, when I developed severe pain late at night that turned out to be acute appendicitis. I was alone and had no idea where to find a hospital. The son I spoke with worked out where I should go and waited while my Uber was supposed to arrive. When it didn’t show, he realized how serious it was and drove me himself. He translated at the desk, helped me understand the insurance issues, and stayed with me until well into the night. I’m deeply grateful for how much they cared and helped. I first arrived in CDMX in Feb 2025 and stayed here for my first week or two. I needed somewhere quiet where I could get work done, and Coyoacan suited me well. There’s a great mercado, good food, shops, squares, and street life. It feels like a neighborhood for Mexicans, almost a small town, while still having strong urban standards for food and service. The hotel itself is cool, and the hosts are even better. The walk into the center of Coyoacan is pleasant, with plenty to see along the way. The staff were nice, there are good cafés nearby, and El Beneficio became a regular spot for me. When I left, I felt my time in Mexico City had been blessed, when it could have felt very different. I only stayed two nights, but the room was tiny, windowless, and ugly. It felt like a prison cell, and getting there meant climbing two flights of spiral stairs. The bathroom was extremely small and the toilet wouldn’t flush. It was noisy and uncomfortable all around. The room photos look nice, but I think I got the ugliest one. It wasn’t cheap either 🥹 I’ll never come back. Cero empathy.
