Hotel Plaza Almendros, Isla Mujeres

The staff were lovely and went out of their way to help us from the time I booked, meeting our needs and then some. We stayed five days because we wanted an affordable place in a good location that would work for my mom's mobility issues, and this hotel was terrific for all of that. It's right on Hidalgo street and the prices are great. The rooms are large and come with a fridge, microwave, coffee maker (no coffee), cups, plates, utensils, and a TV (no English channels). They're a bit worn, with thin walls and only a thin sheet on the bed, but I'd definitely return. If you have a golf cart, you'll need to park at least a block away since vehicles aren't allowed on Hidalgo. It can be a bit loud at night, though it wasn't bad at all.

The location is superb, the staff are nice, and the bedding is comfortable. The room also has a fridge and microwave, which is handy. But for what it costs, the hotel disappointed me. The pool garden is in poor shape and needs tidying, and there was loads of bird droppings around the pool. The room needs a stovetop hob, and there's no bin in it.

For a budget hotel, it has some great features, including a kitchenette and pool. The AC worked well, the room was cleaned every day, and the shower had good pressure and temperature. The beds were comfortable too. You're right in the middle of everything, and the courtyard rooms I've stayed in are quiet and private. I haven't had an outer room. For a comfortable room three blocks from one of the world's most beautiful beaches, the price is hard to beat.

We've been coming back every year for 15 years. The staff feel like family to us.
