The terrace views were lovely, and I enjoyed the free morning yoga. The staff were nice, and the hotel was pleasant, though it could use some updating. Our suite had a kitchen, but there weren't many plates or utensils. The main drawback was how far it was from downtown, and we struggled to get taxis. The front desk helped call them, but it closes in the evening and at night. We rented a golf cart for a few days, which was a bit expensive. The restaurant is closed on Mondays. Next time, we'll stay somewhere within walking distance of food.
The restaurant is up on the roof, so don't be put off by the entrance. Breakfast was simple but wonderful. My wife had the shrimp and eggs, and I had the Mayan breakfast, which I'd recommend. The Mayan spices turned the eggs black, so be ready for that, but they were delicious and different. I'd happily have them again!
The room called Harmony was small, but worth the price. It was a beautiful, peaceful place, and the staff were so helpful and lovely. The hotel manager was especially sweet, always available and ready to help with whatever we needed. We love this place and plan to bring our families back next year! The views are fantastic, but the room fell short. There was no door on the toilet, the Wi-Fi didn't work, and the tight space made it hard to get into bed. A gecko on the wall kept us awake. It's two miles from town, with no breakfast, and the walk into town goes through a deserted area.
I just got home after five days at casa ixchel, and I already feel casasick. It's like being homesick for the place. The restaurant is the craziest part: easily the best on the island, classy and delicious without being crazy expensive. People who live on the island, especially those who moved there, rave about it, and so do I. The hotel is right on the water, with an ocean breeze and a quiet place to sleep. Other hotels might be more inclusive, but here you can explore from a spot close to everything and away from the noise. On a small island that's 90% beach front, that's a great setup. Don't take my word for it, go stay somewhere else. But if I died tomorrow, I'd want to spend my remaining days here. What a place, or maybe heaven.
