The rooftop setup was odd: the food came from Serrano, a restaurant a block away. We liked the food, but the drinks were poor. The bartender was working alone, and when my husband ordered a mezcalita, he made a “specialty” version that was mostly coconut cream. We’d admired the beautiful lobby and the hotel’s location on previous trips to Loreto, so we finally booked one night. The room’s window looked onto the lobby courtyard and main stairs, which left it dark and without privacy. We kept the curtains shut. When we found the shower head was broken, we asked to move. The replacement room down the hall had a much better shower, but it smelled like a septic tank and had a smaller bed. There was no hand soap in the dish, and little bits of wood were on the bathroom counter. The rooms didn’t seem clean or well serviced, and the atmosphere felt dark and oppressive. We only stayed one night, but would have been very disappointed to spend a whole vacation here. The hotel left a lot to be desired. It’s worth a look inside, but I wouldn’t spend money to stay here.

The hotel is lovely and well located, but our stay was awful. Our room’s bathroom didn’t work, so we had to use the foyer bathrooms downstairs, where there was no toilet paper or soap. We asked twice to have our toilet fixed, and it never was. Reception was often unattended, and when someone was there, they seemed indifferent. After checking out, I realized I’d left clothes in a drawer. I called six times during the next 18 hours and got no answer, and my email asking about them went unanswered too. When I went back in person, some things were still there, but a dress, cotton shirt, and underwear were missing. The manager blamed me instead of accepting that one of the staff might have taken them. He also refused to give me the hotel management’s name or contact details. A terrible experience. Don’t stay here.

Do not book a room here through an online travel company. The hotel has new ownership and apparently no relationship with those booking sites. Dozens of people, us included, arrived thinking we had rooms and had to look for somewhere else to stay. To add insult to injury, Expedia charged my credit card.

We barely slept. The old hotel is beautiful, but nearby bars are loud and church bells seemed to ring every 15 minutes through the night. We found earplugs at a pharmacy on day two. I wish the hotel had provided them, so we could have slept on our first vacation night too. The mattresses were hard, and the bottom sheet kept slipping off. I’d wake up from the bells or bars and find myself on the old, uncovered mattress. They should use fitted sheets. Our room’s fridge had been removed, which was inconvenient, and housekeeping never refilled the drinking water. The staff were pleasant and the location was excellent, but the stay felt like roughing it. I’d come back to the restaurant, but not to sleep here.

We came for sunset drinks and ended up enchanted by the courtyard at ground level. Look up and you can see the bottom of the rooftop pool, then take the spiral stairs up to the public bar. From there, you can sit with a drink and look out over all of Loretto. The rooftop is magical, and the service was amazing.
