Alo Select Mazatlan

It's a basic, cost-effective place with the essentials, and that's about it. I didn't mind staying here, but don't expect it to be the nicest option around. The good parts: it's cheap, relatively clean, and close to the beach. There's a pool, air conditioning, towels, polite reception and room service, hot water eventually, and a basic breakfast. The downsides: the internet cut out so often that I couldn't tell if coverage was just poor or if it was being throttled. The bathroom had a musty smell, maybe from strong cleaning products or the shower drain. I wondered whether they use loop seals and septo-bac in the septic system. Either way, bring air freshener. It was loud from vehicles, music, and neighbors. Better-sealed windows and a front door that fit the frame more tightly would help.

The location is great, but the rooms feel a bit dated and had mold and damp walls. It was okay for one night. We had no hot water during our stay, and hopefully they'll fix that soon.

The front desk conversation was very brief and came with an attitude. The manager didn't bother to answer when I said hello. Daily housekeeping was pleasant and friendly, though, and the lady at breakfast was very nice. Ten stars for her.

We came in on a Saturday and this was the only hotel available. Now I understand why. The front desk guy seemed totally clueless, and checking us in took literally 30 minutes. Maybe he was new, I don't know. The room didn't impress us either. There were rat traps all over, and the rooms were much smaller than they looked. Still, it was a $60-a-night hotel, so fine. Then we saw there were no pillows on the beds. We went downstairs to ask, and they told us they had no pillows and used these mini cushions instead, like in the picture. Don't make the same mistake I did.
