Because weather canceled my flight, the airline rebooked me and I needed extra nights for myself and my kids. The front desk clerk said booking with him directly would be much cheaper than using Booking.com, supposedly because cleaning fees, U.S. taxes, and Booking’s commission wouldn’t apply. When I asked what the fees were, he gave that explanation, but the difference turned out to be only $11, so it felt misleading. He also promised free breakfast, then at check-in called this a “5-star bed and breakfast,” which didn’t line up with the services provided. The front desk staff’s honesty concerns me, as do the misleading sales tactics and the extremely overpriced tours they try to sell. I wouldn’t recommend using the property’s services. Proceed with caution.

The rooms were modern, roomy, clean, and comfortable, and the atrium was beautiful. Staff were friendly and attentive. William, Emanuel, and Laura were especially helpful, and even with a language barrier they made sure we could communicate. We also loved the little pool and hot tub on the top deck, a nice place to cool off during the day and soak at night. Casa Herman suites felt safe and secure, within walking distance of museums, cathedrals, and lots of restaurants. The antique elevator was fun to ride. Breakfast was limited to baked goods and coffee, but I loved our stay and would highly recommend it.

They first demanded a 10% tip for terrible service. I was charged for desserts they forgot to bring, and only got them after asking twice. They came as takeout, and when I asked for a refund, they refused, saying the desserts had already been served. Disgusting. They care about appearances and clearly don’t care about customers. I’ll never go back.

Casa Hermann Suites was comfortable and felt worth the roughly $140 US per night we paid. Its location is great, one block west of the Zócalo and a minute on foot from El Cardenal, a good spot for breakfast or lunch if you make reservations. Entry from the street is by keycard, and there’s a very friendly doorman at reception, though he only speaks Spanish. We stayed in Room 1, at the front of the building on the third floor. Four huge windows brought in natural light and looked onto Calle de la Palma, with only an ugly building across the street. The double blinds were decent but not blackout. Street noise didn’t bother us much on Monday and Tuesday, which were probably quieter than the weekend. The room was vast, with a 12-foot ceiling, two comfortable queen beds, nice modern furniture and lighting, and it was extremely clean. There were no outlets beside the beds, and the AC wasn’t powerful, so we were quite warm at night. The marble bathroom had a huge backlit mirror and a long toiletries shelf. It was clean and everything worked, though the shower pressure was rather weak. A kitchen area had a fridge, microwave, stovetop, coffee maker, and toaster. There was no kettle, but a pan for boiling water on the stove. The interior courtyard was pleasant, with seating and windows from most of the other rooms looking onto it. In the morning, a very basic breakfast was set out at one end: coffee, fake orange juice, and mini pastries.

The front desk staff were incredibly kind and accommodating, even with our language barrier. The rooms were spacious and well equipped. Riding the antique elevator was fun, although it was slow and quite loud. I’d rate the stay 4.5!
