The place is so noisy that light sleepers should expect an early start. Guests made calls and played music all night, and staff didn’t enforce any quiet time. Around 5 a.m., men at reception began tossing newspaper bundles around, talking loudly and playing music. The reception also serves as a newspaper distribution point. On the last night there was no water, and there was no soap in the toilets during the whole stay. I was bitten all over by bed bugs the first night. When I told the manager, he said he knew about the problem and didn’t seem very concerned. We were in a room with two small babies who cried a lot at night. I’d never seen toddlers in a dorm before. On the second day, someone else had taken our dorm beds when we got back. Staff had moved our belongings without asking, which felt disrespectful. To their credit, they did give us a better room. I stayed three nights. In retrospect, it makes for a pretty funny story.

The main hassle was getting in. Since there’s no door key, you have to depend on staff answering the bell, and I waited over five minutes after ringing several times. The women’s dorm behind reception was quiet, and the curtains on the beds were nice, though a bit see-through. Breakfast was good, the shower water was properly hot, and the internet was generally better than average, just not fast. A light at each bunk would be a nice addition.

Friendly staff, a pretty interior, and a quiet street at night. It felt safe, the rooms were fairly clean, and the bed was okay. The dorms had curtains and outlets, though no light at the bed. The showers didn’t have hot water, and the kitchen had no kettle or other way to boil water.

The beds have wooden planks around them that seem to amplify every movement and sound. I’ve had worse pillows and mattresses nowhere during 12 months of backpacking. The shower was freezing, and whenever someone used it, the women’s bathroom flooded. Breakfast is said to start at 7 or 8, but that’s when the staff arrive to prepare it, so expect it about 30 minutes later. The location was great, the beds were clean, towels were available for a deposit, and the kitchen looked good. I don’t understand why it gets such high ratings compared with other places I’ve stayed in M city.

Casa Maria Hostal is the most beautiful and architecturally impressive boutique hostel I’ve stayed in. The mansion feel, high ceilings, and historic stained glass windows give it so much character. Even the basics are top-notch, with new bathrooms and a roomy lounge. The staff are friendly, and Natalia especially went out of her way to help make the stay enjoyable.
