The room was dark, uncomfortable, and poorly laid out, with very little light and no warmth. It felt more like a storage room than a hotel room. The walls were paper thin, so I could hear people in the next room talking and moving around as if they were in mine. Sleeping was out of the question. There was no heater, and Mexico City gets cold at night. My room was freezing, with no warning, solution, or apology. I was just expected to put up with it. On top of that, random extra fees appeared with no explanation, and staff couldn't clearly say what they were for. It felt dishonest and predatory, like they assumed guests wouldn't question the charges. Royal Reforma was a nightmare from start to finish. It shouldn't be operating, let alone charging people. There are countless better options in Mexico City. This was a complete waste of money and energy. Stay anywhere else.

The front desk staff were nice, and my second room was good. The first room's bathroom was in poor shape and needed some remodeling or repairs. At the rooftop terrace and pool, drinks were overpriced. The waiter served ours, then never came back to check on us, though he did check on other guests who were white. He also had an attitude. When I asked if we could charge the drinks to my room, he asked, "I don't know, is your account open?" I said I wasn't sure, and he replied, "You should remember if you did." I made the reservation months ago and don't remember being asked whether I wanted the account open. I was there a couple of weeks ago too, and you can't bring your own beer. If you do, you'll be charged $950 pesos. There were lots of mosquitos in our room. We killed several every night, but found more the next day. The TV made a loud static noise whenever anything white and bright appeared on screen, and dark scenes looked darker than usual. This may not have been the hotel's fault, but we had the do not disturb sign on our door. The little girl next door might have flipped it. A lady came to clean, and I said we were okay and trying to sleep. She kept knocking and scolded me about the sign. I explained that I'd put it on do not disturb, and she looked visibly upset.

The location was 10/10 for exploring, with bars, restaurants, and stores within walking distance. Though the street was busy, I didn't notice any ground-floor noise from my room. Reception was very kind and quick to sort things out during our pleasant 6 night/5 day stay. On day one the key card wouldn't lock our room door, so they promptly moved us to a similar room. That one had a broken safe and AC, and they switched us again without hesitation. They quickly upgraded us to a nicer room on a remodeled floor. The bed was extremely uncomfortable, though. If you're used to memory foam or a hybrid mattress, the spring bed here may be hard to sleep on. I tossed and turned and didn't get a good night's rest. The unrenovated floors also have old bathroom tiles, peeling bathtub ceramic, and very old, dirty carpet. Keep that in mind when booking. Luckily I was upgraded to a renovated floor.

The rooftop pool has a nice view, and the location and service are excellent. The rooms are old, though, and the beds aren't very comfortable.

I went up to the rooftop for a drink and snack, but the waiter never checked whether I needed anything. It seemed he only served men. When I asked at the bar for something to eat, he said there were no vegetables or vegetarian options. Only after my male colleague asked did he offer a menu with more food choices. I'd suggest eating somewhere else, where it's much cheaper and the service is better.
