Two days before my November 1 stay, the hotel told me they couldn’t accommodate me, even though they’d accepted the reservation and charged my card. I had nowhere to go during Dia de Muertos, when accommodation in Oaxaca was around 600 AUD for the night. They offered alternative accommodation but didn’t provide its address, then changed my reservation from November 1 to November 4 without my authorization. They blamed Booking.com for the mistake, although someone named Rosalinda had contacted me by message. I’d booked and planned this trip months ahead and paid a premium because it’s Mexico’s busiest season. Now I have to sleep on the street with my luggage instead of enjoying my trip. I’m devastated, angry, and scared to arrive without anywhere to stay. They did this to a woman traveling alone. They don’t care about women’s safety.

Five days before our reservation, the property contacted me to say they couldn’t honor it and asked me to cancel, despite having sent a booking confirmation. Their unprofessional communication and record keeping have left us scrambling to find somewhere for Día de los Muertos, and we’ll now have to pay hundreds of dollars more.

The staff were really friendly. Even those who didn’t speak English used their phones to translate. Breakfast was very nice, and there’s a mezcal bar inside. The location is great, about 25 minutes from the airport by taxi and a 10-minute walk to the zocalo and all the nice restaurants.

The service at the hotel and mezcal bar was incredibly friendly, and the rooms were comfortable, spacious, quiet, and very clean. The area isn’t very attractive and the center is a little far away, though you can walk there in eight minutes.

There’s a bus station three blocks away, with buses to places such as Puerto Escondido. The architecture is fantastic, and the open-air courtyard and wonderful artwork make the place very charming. It feels authentic and welcoming. Breakfast was truly luxurious and traditional, with something different each day. The staff were attentive, and I felt very comfortable.
