Hotel Monte Alban

I keep coming back to this grand old place, on and off for about 30 years now. It seems to have had a recent refresh, and still has so much charm and character. The rooms are lovely, the staff are great, and the location is hard to beat. I love it here!

The hotel was really lovely. Our room was clean, and they left the best chocolate I've ever had. The food was good too. I'm a picky eater and wish I'd tried more, though my aunt shared some of hers and it was great. I didn't meet the owner, but from what I've seen, she seems like a great person. About the cats: they don't go into the kitchen, and they can wander around the hotel. The owner feeds these street cats, and they don't bother guests, so please let them be. We arrived as the 20 de noviembre celebration was getting started after church. We watched it while walking back to the hotel, then I could still see it from the window. I'm already planning another Mexico trip soon, and I'll be stopping here again 🫶🏻

The balcony has wonderful views, and the staff have been lovely and helpful. I'm staying here now and it's already exceeded what I expected. The building is beautiful, full of amazing details, and feels timeless. I saw a review saying it needs updating, but I really don't think it does. Give the water a little time and the showers get HOT.

If walking around el Centro is your plan, the location is the big draw, right beside the Zocalo. We could shop, drop things off at the hotel, then head out on foot again. The staff were modest and the service was great. We were also allowed to check in early at no extra charge. Prices are written clearly at reception, so there were no surprises. The rooms are rustic but comfortable, and the food was fine, nothing fancy, with a relaxing atmosphere. If you're after high-tech 5-star service, this may not suit you. For the location, I highly recommend it.
